Still life set up offers the most effective way to learn drawing and painting through intensive observation from life. In this workshop, students will learn how to start a painting with a color wash and develop the painting with brush handling, color and texture. We will study various still-lifes in history as we form our own interpretation and meaning of contemporary still-life.
Spring quarter 2020 classes will be held online.

  • Paper/Canvas/Sculpting Material
  • SUPPORTS
  • One stretched canvas, no bigger than 16 x 20" (optional)
  • Students can also use 9x12" Canson canvas paper pads or a couple canvas sheets (these are for practice only)
  • Paint/Color/Dry media
  • OIL PAINTS
  • Again, bring what you have and chances are that you have enough for this workshop. If you are beginning, buy professional-grade only - Daniel Smith, Gamblin, Sennelier, Utrecht, Winsor & Newton, Rembrandt and Holbein are all suitable.
  • To begin, you need only a limited palette;
  • Titanium white
  • Yellow ochre
  • Burnt sienna
  • Ultramarine blue
  • Later you can add the following (optional)
  • Cadmium yellow medium
  • Lemon yellow
  • Cadmium red medium
  • Alizarin Crimson
  • Raw Umber
  • Prussian blue
  • Sap green
  • Viridian
  • Permanent green light
  • Brush/Pencils/Sculpting tools
  • BRUSHES
  • Different brushes have different size system, so I generally look for a range of sizes like the size of a thumb, a pinky or a ring finger. Bring the brushes you have and chances are that they are enough. If you have no brushes, then get a couple synthetic brushes in the size below
  • #4, #10 filberts or flat
  • One small round #2 synthetic brush
  • Miscellaneous
  • Gamsol (school provide this, no need to buy your own)
  • Paper towels (Viva or the auto one that's blue)
  • Small plastic garbage bag
  • Palette cup for gamsol
  • Palette knive for mixing (blade should be at lease one inch and bendable at the mid section
  • Disposable palette pad or wood palette or what you have (a roll of parchment paper works too)
  • Optional/additional notes
  • For a weekend workshop, I generally don't use any medium. But in case you like your paint more fluid, you can bring linseed oil or any synthetic equivalent medium.
  • Art stores recommendations.

  • Gamsol (for oil paint, Gage usually supplies)
