In this 3-day workshop, Tenaya shares the system and techniques he developed specifically for creating large-scale figurative paintings. Though a progression of lectures, demos, class exercises and work-alongs, Tenaya takes students along a deep-dive tour of developing the critical components needed to create a large-scale figurative painting.
As it’s not possible to create a layered, large-scale figurative oil painting over a 3 day period with these techniques, this workshop will focus on developing a ‘prototype’, and address the particular challenges associated with this subject. Creating a successful prototype, or mock-up that solves all the ‘big picture’ problems of the piece, allows the artist to settle into expressing the subtleties and nuances in the execution of the painting without getting bogged down.
A key theme in this workshop is how to ‘frontload’ experimentation, effectively plan your piece before executing the actual painting, while leaving the right amount of room for top level improvisation.
