This Studio Concentration will be held online, with class meetings in the morning.

Here is a subject that is fundamental and necessary to every kind of art, with ideas and techniques that can be simple or complex, personal or universal, and applicable to any medium. But where do you begin? In this class we will answer that question by studying and then recreating compositional structures, starting with simple ones like the three formats and their power centers, and then setting up and drawing still lifes that show various eye pathways. Next we will do the same with Pythagorean layouts, the armature of the rectangle, and the z-axis. Composition in one form or another is the basis of all good art from realistic work to complete abstraction. Learning how to see the structures within existing art, and then how to create them for your own work is what this workshop will be focusing on. We will work in pencil on paper to begin with, and will add in color in the second week, if possible.
