In this one-week intensive course, students will draw the human form from a live model in charcoal, pencil, and black and white acrylic paint . Students will learn how drawing the figure and the surrounding space from observation can be an act of deep creative invention, where the orchestration of light, form, and space are used as metaphors for the physical and emotional experience of life. Students will engage in a process of ‘seeing’ that admits both a rational analysis and an intuitive
understanding of the motif. Each student will learn how to develop a unique, pictorially intelligent response to their drawing as it begins to take its place on the paper. Particular emphasis will be placed on the use of tone, not only as a means of interpreting light but also to investigate the fundamental relationships that give a drawing its form - scale, rhythm, measure, sequence, shape, and space. Tone will also be discussed as a basis for making color decisions in painting. Other aspects of picture making will be introduced in focused exercises to further help students learn to create images that integrate structure with expression. Continual reference will be made to historic works of art to help clarify the issues being considered.
Spring quarter 2020 classes will be held online.
