We are all spending a lot of time looking outside from our windows. Why not paint them? Windows are a challenging subject so we'll look at examples of windows from painters past and current, study their techniques and apply them to our own paintings in gouache or acrylic.

  • 9x12 Smooth Bristol or a "large or extra large" Moleskine Sketchbook (basically cardstock weight paper anywhere from 6x8 to 9x12 inches in size) (we will be working mostly around the size of an index card or typical postcard)
  • soft watercolor brushes--
  • 2 rounds size 3
  • 1 round size 8
  • 1 flat roughly 1/4"
  • 1 flat roughly 1/2"
  • pencil for sketching and marking off paper
  • painters or drafting tape to mark off edges
  • 1 small spray bottle for travel toilletry or for "water color" (you will use this to spritz your palette to re-hydrate paint evenly as you work)
  • Palette Paper or ceramic/glass plate/sheet
  • GOUACHE (preferred brands: Windsor and Newton, Holbein, M. Graham)
  • Holbein and Windsor and Newton both make primary sets for mixing, either would be a great start! (Holbein's has magenta, cyan, yellow, white and black | Windsor and Newton's has magenta, cyan, yellow, green, black and white)
  • If you'd rather get paint by the each--
  • I'd at minimum get:
  • REDS: cad red or flame red and magenta OR just primary red
  • YELLOWS: cad yellow or primary yellow
  • BLUES: ultramarine blue and a torquoise or pthalo blue or "cyan" or "primary blue"
  • WHITE: I'd get a 37 ml tube "permanent white" Windsor and Newton has the best price for this
  • OPTIONAL: Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna, Black
