" In this on-line two day workshop students will learn how to portray dramatic lighting when painting the landscape. Students can work from a pre-set landscape image or bring their own material to class.
Atelier instructor Mark Kang-O'Higgins will demonstrate how to start, build up and finish a dramatic landscape painting.
Topics will include: Subject matter and mood choice, the use of colored grounds, composition and using value and color to create a focal point, mark-making and basic perspective, color mixing and value contrast to create atmosphere, symbols and the politics of the landscape.
Students will have the option of painting along step-by- step on a shared image or bringing their own source materials to class.
Each morning will start with topic discussions/lectures and a demonstration of landscape painting technique. Students will be given time to paint their own landscape working on the workshop principles with feedback/direction from the instructor. "

  • Source Material:
  • I will be providing a number of atmospheric landscape images (posted shortly) and will do a demonstration from one of them.
  • You are welcome also to bring along your own inspirational image/photograph also if you have a particular landscape scene that you are interested in painting.
  • ?Painting? General Materials:
  • Really bring along (where ever you are painting from) what works best for you!! Everything below is a recommendation not absolutely required. If you have your own preferred colors I will give you advice on them, if not then follow the recommendations below.
  • Solvent:
  • I recommend non-toxic solvents such gamsol or eco-house.
  • Mediums:
  • Linseed Oil & gamblin solvent gell are what I use but only sparingly if at all.
  • Refined linseed oil useful if mixed half and half with your solvent, in a small separate container for use later in the painting.
  • (other mediums/solvent mixtures are discussed in class). Liquin, Galkyds and other toxic mediums are currently banned from Gage classrooms but as you are painting at home, it's up to you.
  • Hardware Materials:
  • A Storage cups with lids for mediums, oils, etc.
  • Palette of any sort (paper ones are ok but not the best, glass and plastic are fine).
  • Soft cloth rags (i.e. pieces of an old cotton T-shirt) great for erasing.
  • Paper towels (Viva is a good brand, smooth non-textured)use for cleaning your brushes.
  • Canvas/Panel:
  • Have one canvass/panel for your finished piece: but best to have some other spare canvases for quick studies.
  • Use whatever size you are most comfortable with. I will be painting on a 2ft x 4ft acrylic primed wooden panel.
  • But you can paint on a canvas pad, sheets of 18'x24 canvas in a pad, (fredericks are a good brand) canvas paper does not work as well but if you are comfortable working with that, it's fine. or..
  • 18" x 24" pre-primed canvas for first painting class.
  • Skin protection:
  • I use reusable garden gloves, and/or barrier cream (to protect from chemicals and solvents!)
  • Colors:
  • I will be using these colors below. They are my main all-round full color palette. I may not use all of them but they are generally what I use.
  • You are welcome to use your own colors and I will advise you on them.
  • Full color palette:
  • Flake white replacement or titanium white (zinc white ok also), Naples yellow light, yellow ochre, cadmium yellow, cadmium orange, cadmium red light, transparent red oxide, mars orange, burnt umber, raw umber, alizarin crimson, ultramarine blue, cerulean blue, Prussian blue, terra vert, permanent green light, viridian green, sap green.
  • Brushes:
  • Bring your favorites. Specifics are discussed during first painting class. At a minimum, however, you should have some soft (sablettes/imitation hair) brushes for oil. Filberts and rounds are preferable to flats however, again whatever you commonly use are fine. Make sure that you have at least three small, three medium and a large brush or two.
  • General Workshop schedule:
  • Welcome, introductions & land acknowledgement.
  • Landscape Painting Discussion:
  • Motivations, Image choice, Basic perspective issues, value range & focal point, color & envelope of light.
  • Brief Materials Discussion.
  • Demonstration: (roughly 90 mins but can be further developed during the workshop. Students are welcome to just watch or paint along with)
  • Student paint time with individual and group critiques/suggestions from instructor.
