In this introductory fundamentals class, learn key concepts and artistic principles in order to accurately render line, shape, proportion and negative space while working from simple objects and the still-life. Students explore various drawing media, including charcoal and graphite, as you progress from simple lines toward a nuanced understanding of tonal description.

  • Beginning Drawing Supply list – July 2020
  • Sketchbook of any size
  • 1 pad drawing paper – (any size around 11"x14" or 12"x16")
  • Graphite pencil set - HB, B, 2B, 4B, 6B, 8B (or a similar range)
  • Erasers - art gum or white eraser for graphite, workable eraser for charcoal
  • Chamois (blending cloth for charcoal)
  • Stumps - 2-4 in various sizes
  • Small can fixative spray (to finalize your charcoal drawings)
  • Soft vine or willow charcoal - 5-7 sticks
  • Soft compressed charcoal - 1-2 sticks
  • Ruler
  • Pencil Sharpener
  • Artist's tape or blue tape
  • Scissors
