In this workshop, students will approach the subject material through an “internal” process of observation. This internal and personal connection to nature will be reflected in the student's art. Nature is alive and has a powerful energy. Students will be encouraged to capture this energy in their painting. We will be exploring how to render these natural forms using a layering technique to bring to life the form, light, volume, color and texture of these unique structures. Some time will be spent outside, on ones own, absorbing and observing our natural surroundings. Back in the student's studio, resources for subject material will be brought in from the outside, and the use of photos. Class will meet daily on Zoom in the morning for demo, lecture and questions. Instructor will set up personal and group critiques throughout the week.

  • In thinking about this workshop which will be taught via Zoom instead of teaching in a classroom under normal circumstances I have decided not to require a strict materials list in order to make it easier on the students. I paint with oils and prefer to use a combo of walnut alkyd oil and odorless mineral spirits as my medium. I encourage you to use what you already have on hand but make sure you have the following: Drawing tools such as pencils or charcoal, paints, brushes, palette knives, mediums, cloth rags and your preferred painting surfaces. Just make sure you have in your paint supply both warm and cool colors. I will be painting on a 18”x18” board during my demonstrations so be sure to have a size no less than than this. If canvas is your preferred surface that works as well, but if you have never painted on board now might be a time to explore.
  • The only other material you will need to have on hand in your studio is what you gather for subject matter. This can either be actual material found in nature such as branches, dried leaves etc or photos taken or found that resonate with you. I tend to have both photos and a big assortment of natural stuff in my studio. If painting is completely new to you I have included below a list of materials.
