Workshop to meet Saturday, Sunday and Monday

The world we see is made up of a complex network of interlocking abstract shapes, and in this workshop we will use observational painting to explore the interactions between the colors, shapes, and edges that surround us. You will learn various techniques and tools to help you see the abstraction that is front of you and translate it into dynamic observational paintings.

Each day the instructor will meet for a lecture and demo for the first couple of hours every morning and then have individual and group critiques in the afternoon to discuss student paintings. Students may choose to work in oil or acrylic, however the rapid drying time of acrylic will allow less time for alterations of works in progress.

  • Paint: (Oil or Acrylic Paint)
  • Titanium White (Titanium-Zinc preferred-this is a mixing white)
  • Ultramarine Blue (or French Ultramarine)
  • Phthalo Blue
  • Alizarin Crimson and/or Quinacridone Red
  • Cadmium Red Medium
  • Cadmium Yellow Medium
  • Hansa Yellow Light or Lemon Yellow
  • Optional colors:
  • Burnt Sienna
  • Dioxazine Violet
  • Cobalt Blue
  • Cadmium Orange (or similar orange)
  • Cadmium Green (or similar green- I like Utrecht’s Brilliant Green, Permanent Green Light is good too)
  • Brushes: An assortment of brights, flats, rounds, filberts that you like (bristle and/or synthetic, synthetic recommended). At a minimum, please include some synthetic mid-size bright, flat, or filbert brushes (roughly a ½ inch in size), and a smaller brush for detail work.
  • Canvas:
  • Canvas Pad (16”x20”)(make sure its canvas not canvas paper; canvas boards or panels are okay too)
  • Solvent and/or Mediums and extras:
  • For Oil Only:
  • Gamblin Gamsol (provided by Gage, but you may want a small bottle for yourself)
  • Gamblin Galkyd (or other Alkyd medium) (small bottle) (you can also get Gamblin’s solvent free medium, or Galkyd gel)
  • Small bottle of baby oil (optional, but great for getting paint off skin)
  • For Acrylic Only: (Liquitex or Golden are the best quality acrylic brands)
  • Small spray bottle (that sprays a good mist- not stream of water)
  • Flow Release (optional)
  • Retarder (optional) (adding a little mixture of flow release, water, and retarder you can slow down the drying time of acrylic paints)
  • Miscellaneous:
  • Palette: A flat piece of Glass or Plexiglass is best (get one at least 10”x12” but a little bigger, closer to 12”x16”, would be better, palette paper is fine, and do not get a palette with cups in it)
  • Masking Tape, Painters Tape, and/or Clips (to hold canvas/paper to board)
  • 18”x24” board (to tape or clip paper/canvas to, a drawing board works fine)
  • 2 Palette knives (metal pallet knives, not too small not too big)
  • 2 Jars with lids (for cleaning brushes) For Oil: (get try to get a coil jar if you can)
  • Rags (lint free, old t-shirt is fine) (and/or a roll of good paper towels or blue shop towels)
  • Smock or apron (optional, but recommended)
  • Plastic wrap (optional- to cover palette to save wet paint -something like Saran Wrap)
  • Disposable Nitrile or Latex Gloves (if you want to keep your hands clean)
