Gage Artistic Director Gary Faigin chats with painter Clive Smith, a recipient of the First Prize Portrait Award from The National Portrait Gallery in London, England, where his commissioned portrait of actor Sir Ian McKellen's portrait now hangs. Clive will discuss how his work pushes the boundaries of what is conventionally thought of as a portrait, using multiple images and unconventional presentations to question the purpose of a life portrait, and how it tells us as much about the relationship between the artist and the model as it does about the subject itself. Clive will be teaching a workshop based on his unique approach to portraiture at Gage from July 13-17, and space is still available.
