This online class will introduce watercolor, gouache, and ink painting on paper with comprehensive live demos and curated examples of each topic and technique. Working from observation, photographic references, and our imaginations, we will learn to create striking compositions, build and blend layers of paint, and experiment with color mixing. Each week we will study a new subject while improving our water media skills.

  • Materials:
  • Watercolor paint set and/or gouache paint set
  • Watercolor brushes – several shapes/sizes (Ex. Angle, filbert, round)
  • Watercolor cold press paper pad, 140 lb. (size: preferably 9”x12 or 11”x14”)
  • India or sumi ink – black or brown
  • Ink brushes (bamboo brushes work great, but you can also use watercolor brushes with ink)
  • Water container
  • Watercolor well mixing palette
  • Paper towels
  • Blue or painter’s tape
  • Cardboard or drawing board for taping down watercolor paper
  • Glue stick
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Pencil and eraser
