Learn to stretch, prime, and tone your own canvas; work with a tonal underpainting; mix a full spectrum of colors; employ a variety of brush effects; and use glazing medium. Over the course of this beginning level class, you will complete three still life paintings, each setup designed to improve your working knowledge of the materials and techniques of oil painting. Classes will begin with with a lecture and demonstration by the instructor; the remainder of class time is devoted to painting. Students should have basic drawing skills

  • FOR YOUR STILL LIFE SET UP
  • *(Optional) A medium sized cardboard box (about 18” x 18” x 16”) in which you’ll
  • set up your still life (If you don’t have a box, you can instead arrange your still life
  • objects on a table top).
  • *One or two pieces of solid colored fabric and several clothespins.
  • *An assortment of 5-7 simple still life objects (For example: bottle, vase, cup,
  • book, fruit, etc.).
  • *A lamp that you can use to illuminate your still life set up.
  • OIL PAINTS
  • Titanium White 150ml tube
  • Yellow Ochre 37ml tube
  • *Burnt Umber 37ml tube
  • Cadmium Red Medium 37ml tube
  • Cadmium Yellow Light 37ml tube
  • Indian Red 37ml tube
  • Burnt Sienna 37ml tube
  • Viridian 37ml tube
  • French Ultramarine 37ml tube
  • Alizarin Crimson 37ml tube
  • Sap Green 37ml tube
  • Ivory Black 37ml tube
  • BRUSHES
  • A variety of synthetic brushes for smooth application, and bristle brushes for
  • rough application. Below is a suggested combination of shapes and sizes.
  • *Two Flats (large synthetic soft bristle and small synthetic soft bristle)
  • *Two Rounds (medium hog bristle and small synthetic soft bristle)
  • *Two Filberts (large hog bristle and medium hog bristle)
  • *One 1 1/2” cheap house painter’s brush
  • CANVAS
  • *One stretched and primed canvases or canvas boards, approximate size 16” x
  • 20” for the first day of class.
  • Two additional stretched and primed canvases or canvas boards, approximate
  • size 16” x 20”
  • SOLVENT AND MEDIUM
  • *1 quart (946ml) Weber Odorless Turpenoid or other solvent
  • *250ml bottle of Winsor & Newton Liquin Original or Gamblin Galkyd Lite, or
  • other similar oil painting medium.
  • PALETTE
  • *One palette-at least 11” x 14”, any material or shape (a 12” x 16” wooden
  • rectangular palette works well)
  • SKETCH PAD AND PENCIL
  • *Sketch pad, about 9” x 12”
  • *Sketching pencil
  • PALETTE KNIFE
  • *A medium size palette knife that is suitable for mixing paint (diamond shape
  • works well)
  • PALETTE CUP
  • *2” double cup
  • RAGS
  • *An old T-shirt to be used for rags or paper towels
  • JAR WITH LID
  • *Empty peanut butter jar with lid (to hold solvent in)
