In this course, students will expand their technical skills and ideas for self-expression through the genres of still life and portrait in oil. Learn to develop a unique style through choices in composition, subject matter, color, and approach to the painting process. We'll address the foundations of value, warm and cool color relationships, as well as methods for self-correction and problem solving. Conducted on Zoom, this online class will feature live demos and individual critique. It is accessible for complete beginners as well as those looking for guidance to take their work to the next level.

  • Supports: 4 - 11”x 14” Canvas panels or stretched canvas
  • Paints: Student grade and hues work fine
  • - Titanium White (200ml)
  • - Cadmium Yellow
  • - Yellow Ochre
  • - Cadmium Red Light
  • - Alizarin Crimson

  • Brushes: You can bring in your favorite brushes to work with. A mix of sizes, shapes, and bristle vs. synthetic brushes is best.
  • Yupo Paper (either a 9x12" bright white pad or 1 144Ib 26x40" sheet cut into roughly 8x10" pieces)
  • Palette (glass, sealed wooden, or palette paper pad)
  • Trowel shaped palette knife (Dick Blick style #44 is a good size)
  • Scraper with blades (if using glass palette)
  • Absorbent rags (old t-shirts are great)
  • Refined Linseed Oil or Oil Painting Medium (Galkyd, Windsor and Newton, Liquin, etc for faster drying)
  • 1 small jar with lid for medium
  • OMS – Odorless Mineral Spirits (Gamblin Gamsol is approved at Gage)
  • Silicoil Brush Cleaning Tank (optional, 2nd jar also ok)
  • Brush washer (Brush Cleaner, Murphy's Oil Soap, or bar soap in soap dish are good options)
  • • Paper towels
  • • Easel or table top for a work surface
  • • microphone and camera enabled computer
  • • I-pad, smart tablet or smart phone (android or IOS)
