The Atelier Primer is a part-time program modeled after the Georgetown Atelier’s full time curriculum. This new and exciting program will teach the classical foundations of drawing and painting from life, and how to extend from the Observational into the Imaginative. Whether you’re a beginner interested in learning the techniques of observational drawing and painting, or you are an intermediate/advanced student who wants to improve or keep your skills sharp, the Atelier Primer is perfect for you. This evening class is ideal for those who cannot attend classes during the day. Tuesday nights focus on skill building from still lifes, observational studies from plaster casts and master copies. Thursday nights we apply the same techniques to a live model, and focus heavily on constructive anatomy. Led by instructors Riley Doyle and Tiffany Dae, alumni and instructors of the full time atelier, the Atelier Primer is comprised of hands-on demos, lectures, and individual critiques.

  • for the first class:
  • -charcoal pencils
  • -sandpaper
  • -razors
  • -kneaded erasers
  • -smooth newsprint
  • -bulldog clips
  • -drawing board
  • We’ll go over the rest of the supplies during that first day to answer any questions.
  • All Supplies:
  • – Generals Charcoal Pencils: 2 of hard, 4 of medium , 2 of soft.
  • -Faber-Castell Pitt Pastel Pencils. 3 of White #101.
  • – Conte a Paris Pierre Noir Pencil: 2 of b.
  • - a pencil set that includes a pencil sharpener.
  • – 1 pad Canson Tracing Paper 19×24. Do not get other brands! Canson only.
  • – 1 pad Smooth Newsprint Paper, 18×24. Do not get the rough kind!
  • – 1 Sketchbook for notes.
  • – Drawing Board: this can simply be an 18×24 mdf wood panel, foam-core board or similar
  • – 1 roll of artists tape (white)
  • – 2 Kneaded erasers
  • – Roll of paper towels. Lint free preferred, such as the blue shop towel rolls found in hardware stores.
  • – Tortillions: 1 pack of small size, 1 pack of medium size. If you prefer to get a variety pack instead, that’s fine.
  • – Blending Brushes. You won’t need these right away. We will show you what these look like in class and the properties that are important, and you can pick some up later in the trimester.
  • – 2 bulldog clips or similar to clamp newsprint to your board.
  • – Razor blades for sharpening pencils, the rectangular box cutter refills are best for this. Click Here to see an example.
  • – Mahl stick. This is simply a closet dowel, cane, or similar about 2.5-3 ft long, used to steady and keep your hand from smudging. There are nice ones available at Daniel Smith but are on the expensive side.
  • – Sandpaper for sharpening charcoal and conte (150 – 200 grit, depending on preference). This is better found at hardware stores. Don’t get those ‘chicken leg’ hand held sticks with sandpaper.
  • –*** Stonehenge steel gray, and Stonehenge pearl gray paper. Recommend starting with 3 of steel, and 2 of pearl. These come in 22×30/90lb sheets.
  • – Book: Figure Drawing: Design and Invention, by Michael Hampton.
  • • Easel or table top. • Paper towels • microphone and camera enabled computer • ipad or smart tablet. • smart phone (android or IOS) • Strong internet connection • Excited Attitude!
