Through the play of bright light and deep shadows, Caravaggio created an intense realism and heightened drama. These qualities invoked both strong criticism and ardent admiration of his work. In this lecture, we will examine Caravaggio’s paintings, the reception they received from patrons, and explore the influence he had on artists in Italy and beyond. This exploration will include paintings by Artemisia Gentileschi, Jusepe (Jose) de Ribera, and Georges de la Tour.
