As the next step from Beginning Portait Drawing, you will begin working to achieve realistic portraits drawn from the model with gradually increasing timed poses. You will study facial anatomy, proportion, volume and form, and uncover solutions to common drawing challenges such as foreshortening, facial expression, and shading. Lectures, demonstrations, and group critiques will supplement in-class teaching. Prior portrait drawing experience recommended.

  • • *Rough Newsprint 18” x 24” (to pad your drawing paper, and thumbnails)
  • • Strathmore 400 series Toned Tan paper 18” x 24" (3 sheets or a pad)
  • • Strathmore 500 series Charcoal Paper White pad 18” x 24"
  • • Strathmore 400 series Drawing paper White 18” x 24" (2 sheets)
  • Drawing Materials:
  • • *General’s Charcoal pencils (HB, 2B, 4B & 6B)
  • • Willow Charcoal (Med. sticks 5-6 mm)
  • • Compressed Charcoal
  • • General’s White charcoal pencil
  • • Conte Crayon Sanguine pencils (2)
  • • Conte Crayon White pencil
  • • Prismacolor Verithin Pencils - Terra Cotta & Black
  • • *Kneaded eraser
  • • *Chamois
  • • White eraser
  • • *Blending Stumps (not the spiral wound ones)
  • • *Small Snap knife from hardware store
  • • *Sandpaper (one piece of 150 sandpaper is all you’ll need)
  • • *2 bull dog clips
  • • *Dividers
  • • *Wooden skewer (for sighting and measuring)
  • • Tombow Zero Refillable Round Eraser (VERY useful)
  • • Mahl stick
  • *Materials needed for first class, we will discuss and go over other materials in class.
  • Homework: There will be weekly homework for this class. It’s optional, but highly recommended.
