Winter offers the botanical artist a selection of unique subjects, as they don't wilt and change quickly as most plant materials do. Students are encouraged to select a subject of their choice from the many options, and while cones are perhaps the most challenging subject, even beginners can make good progress under the guidance of botanical illustrator and artist Kathleen McKeehen. Over the course of the two-day workshop, you will learn and practice various wash and dry-brush techniques leading towards an accurate and realistic depiction of your subject.

  • - Gummed kraft tape
  • - Arches 140 lb Hot Press watercolor paper—usually 2.00 for quarter sheet
  • - A burnisher for transferring drawings; bone folders can work, as can spoons; I’ll have some for purchase
  • - Pencils: HB, 2H
  • - Good pencil sharpener
  • -painter’s tape will do
  • - Erasers--Rubber gum “kneaded” eraser and “Clic” pencil eraser with soft white eraser (Tombo makes a great tiny one, a nice luxury)
  • - 12-inch or longer ruler or use simple sticks handed out in class; and/or set of measuring dividers (U Book Store, Dick Blick)
  • - ‘Gator board or watercolor board (3/16” 18 x 24 is a good size—about 13.00) unless you use the Arches watercolor blocks so don’t need to stretch paper. THIS IS NOT THE SAME AS FOAM CORE BOARD, WHICH IS NOT STRONG ENOUGH!!
  • - Tracing paper –11 x 14; 25 lb Canson works well, most others do too
  • - Jars/containers for water (2)
  • - Paper towels (Viva is a good brand for this)
  • - Soft brush for removing erasings etc. from painting
  • Brushes: Good quality Kolinksy sable brushes are recommended; there are many sable brushes out there right now but not all, even if listed as “kolinksky”, are of good enough quality. Winsor Newton Series 7 or Da Vinci Maestro 35 for the #3; (DaVinci Cosmotop Spin #3 or Princeton 4850 Elite #3 are synthetics if you prefer not to use animal products.) Isobey or Raphael are also good brands. For your small brush, I like Winsor Newton Series 7 #1, in either regular round or miniature; I get these from jacksonsart.com for very reasonable prices and will have some available. You can also get good synthetic brushes in #1 or #0, such as the DaVInci Cosmotop spin or Princeton, though they won’t last as long as the sable. Another handy brush for lifting and fixing is the Cosmotop Spin #2 flat.
  • You want a high-quality brush with a sharp point and a full belly; ask to test the brush when you buy it in a store. (Dip in water and try it on the special board they usually have—you should be able to get a very fine line. And dip and then tap it against your wrist to see if it comes to a single point, not a split one.)
  • Paints:
  • Wait on these! Bring what you already have, and we’ll figure out what you need or get a small paint palette of basic colors—(about 5.00)* in lieu of buying separate tubes of paints.
  • Palettes:
  • The little rectangular ones with round wells work for mixing up washes—get 2. Or the round palettes with 8-10 wells. Just be sure you get one with a sufficient number of spaces for at least 8 colors. You also want a flat space for mixing and spreading darker washes to form “skins”; a white plate or enamel “butcher pans” with lots of interior open space will work well.
  • Subjects to bring:
  • Some good winter subjects include cones and various greens (holly or conifers) & berries. If there’s something else you’d love to try, let me know beforehand in case I have some pertinent reference handouts or books. I’ll bring lots of cones for those who want to try those.

  • • smart phone (android or IOS)
