This class is in need of a student assistant (class monitor).

A student assistant helps the instructor and other students with zoom issues during class. There are usually very few issues and typically involves helping people with tasks such as unmuting themselves. Beyond that, you are still able to fully participate in the class as a student.
In exchange for this helpful service, Gage offers a 55% reduction in the tuition of the class that you assist for.

In this fundamental oil painting course, learn to capture the effects of solid, reflective, and transparent forms in oil paint. Topics covered in class include include strategies in setting up a still life, and step-by-step lessons on painting textures, including fruit, bread, fabric, glass, and metal. The instructor will begin each class with a short lecture/demonstration, and devote the remainder of the class time to painting. Students should have basic drawing skills.

  • FOR YOUR STILL LIFE SET UP
  • *(Optional) A medium sized cardboard box (about 18” x 18” x 16”) in which you’ll
  • set up the your still life (If you don’t have a box, you can instead arrange your still
  • life objects on a table top).
  • *One or two pieces of solid colored fabric and several clothespins.
  • *An assortment of 5-7 still life objects (For example, my still life will include a
  • glass bottle, a metal cup, three pieces of fruit, and a small loaf of rustic bread)
  • *A lamp that you can use to illuminate your still life set up.
  • OIL PAINTS
  • *Titanium White 150ml tube
  • Yellow Ochre 37ml tube
  • *Burnt Umber 37ml tube
  • Cadmium Red Medium 37ml tube
  • Cadmium Yellow Light 37ml tube
  • Indian Red 37ml tube
  • Burnt Sienna 37ml tube
  • French Ultramarine 37 ml tube
  • Alizarin Crimson 37 ml tube
  • Sap Green 37 ml tube
  • BRUSHES
  • A variety of synthetic brushes for smooth application, and bristle brushes for
  • rough application. Below is a suggested combination of shapes and sizes.
  • *Two Flats (large synthetic soft bristle and small synthetic soft bristle)
  • *Two Rounds (medium hog bristle and small synthetic soft bristle)
  • *Two Filberts (large hog bristle and medium hog bristle)
  • *One 1 1/2” cheap house painter’s brush
  • CANVAS
  • *One stretched and primed canvas or canvas board, approximate size 16” x 20”
  • SOLVENT AND MEDIUM
  • *1 Quart (946ml) Weber Oderless Turpenoid or other solvent
  • *250ml bottle of Winsor & Newton Liquin Original or Gamblin Galkyd Lite, or
  • other similar oil painting medium.
  • PALETTE
  • *One palette-at least 11” x 14”, any material or shape (a 12” x 16” wooden
  • rectangular palette works well)
  • SKETCH PAD AND PENCIL
  • *Sketch pad, about 9” x 12”
  • *Sketching pencil

  • *A medium size palette knife that is suitable for mixing paint (diamond shape

  • *An old T-shirt to be used for rags or paper towels
