How as an artist do you generate new images? How can you trick yourself out of old habits to find new material? This course connects everyone’s innate creative spark with storytelling and straightforward drawing exercises. Oral storytelling, themed readings and image making exercises are braided together throughout the session. Everyone has a unique drawing voice.
In this studio class we will look at a lot of artwork from many different periods and cultures and we will draw all the time. By the end of the class I want you to feel confident that you can draw and express yourself visually and look at artworks with a new appreciation. Using a variety of media approaches, the course will concentrate on constructing images and compositions from disparate sources. Some exercises will be straightforward using observational techniques others will create new images from collage and found images. Examples of exercises include overlaying images from sources such as comic panels, old photographs, and master painters; or creating of a collage that is dissected and redrawn several times until a completely new image arises.
This class is a mixed level course from beginner to intermediate.
