In this intermediate Still Life course, learn to improve design and composition in still life working with Hiroshi Sato, a contemporary realist oil painter who draws influence from past and present artists. Sato’s work shows his interest in geometric design principles of the old masters.

Students will learn fundamentals of design and composition to further the intent of their own work. Each workshop day will consist of a short lecture/demonstration by the instructor with the remainder of the time devoted to painting and explore with the lecture/demo topics in mind. Students should have a basic understanding of drawing and painting.

Sato has a Masters in Fine Art from the Academy of Art University, San Francisco. His work has been featured in various publications such as Fine Art Connoisseur, Juxtapoz Magazine, Visual Art Source and Art Business News Magazine. Sato has exhibited work nationally and locally, including a recent exhibit at the Harris Harvey Gallery in Seattle.

  • ? Scraper with blades (if using glass palette)
  • ? Refined Linseed Oil or Oil Painting Medium (Galkyd, Windsor and Newton, Liquin, etc for faster

  • ? 1 small jar with lid for medium
  • ? OMS – Odorless Mineral Spirits (Gamblin Gamsol is approved at Gage)
  • ? Silicoil Brush Cleaning Tank (optional, 2nd jar also ok)
  • ? Brush washer (Brush Cleaner, Murphy's Oil Soap, or bar soap in soap dish are good options)
