Working with traditional drawing media, students will learn the techniques used to create sophisticated renderings of the figure’s portrait using photography as reference. Students will study the structural concepts and proportions of the head to improve their understanding of the portrait, create a convincing likeness of the model and better negotiate the pitfalls of working from still photography.

  • - Drawing board with clips – (preferably thick foam core with office clips – I prefer NOT to use the drawing boards with built in clips) at least 18x24” in size.
  • - 18x24” sketch pad
  • - 11x14” sketchbook
  • - Graphite pencils – 2H, HB and 6B
  • - Color pencils (earth colors – terra cotta, sanguine, etc)
  • - Kneaded and white erasers
  • - Sharpener
  • - Knife
  • - Skewer, bike spoke or knitting needle (very thin, straight and long sticks)
  • Easel or table top
  • Paper towels
  • • microphone and camera enabled computer
