For those ready to start making narrative art, or simply looking to take their figurative work to the next level, this deep dive into visual storytelling will guide students through a foundation of illustration technique and studio practice.
We will begin with a focus on skill-building in black and white, with emphasis on composition, value, visual storytelling and perspective.
We will then dive into color, learning an array of approaches to color palette design and color storytelling, including palette strategies, color theory and industry terminology.
Finally, we will discuss personal style and how to construct an engaging portfolio of work, while learning tools to continue honing skills beyond the class.
Learning from an artist working in the field, students will gain insights into the professional practice of illustration while sharpening their skills through a combination of studio work, critique, in-class lectures, discussions and guided assignments. Above all, this is a class for empowering you to tell your own stories - to bridge the gap from your imagination to the page.
Each week, we will critique the previous week's homework as a group and learn new concepts relevant to the new assignment. As this is a portfolio class, there will be assignments due each week.
