The Atelier Primer is a part-time program modeled after the Georgetown Atelier’s full time curriculum. This exciting program will teach the classical foundations of drawing and painting from life, and how to extend from the Observational into the Imaginative. Whether you’re a beginner interested in learning the techniques of observational drawing and painting, or you are an intermediate/advanced student who wants to improve or keep your skills sharp, the Atelier Primer is perfect for you. This evening class is ideal for those who cannot attend classes during the day. Tuesday nights focus on skill building from still lifes, observational studies from plaster casts and master copies. Thursday nights we apply the same techniques to a live model, and focus heavily on constructive anatomy. Led by instructors Riley Doyle and Tiffany Dae, alumni and instructors of the full time atelier, the Atelier Primer is comprised of hands-on demos, lectures, and individual critiques.

  • Painting Supplies:
  • -Canvas Pads (Strathmore or Yes! Pads) - recommend a 16"x20" as you can cut them down to size as needed
  • -Tube of Gablin Galkyd Gel (can also substitute Solvent Free Galkyd Gel)
  • -Linseed oil
  • -Gamisol (can be substituted for spike oil; rublev, or chelsea classical studio - email us if you're thinking about this option so we can talk pros and cons with you)
  • -Solvent container with lid for rinsing and dipping brushes
  • -Palette or Palette paper (I use this palette in the style "Grand View Confidant" - keep in mind there is a difference between a left handed and right handed palette)
  • -Palette knife
  • -Paper towels
  • -Bar(s) of unscented soap to clean brushes (you can also buy brush cleaner from an art supply store)
  • Brushes:
  • -You'll want to experiment a little with brushes as there is a lot of variety out there, but mainly you'll want a couple in synthetic, and a couple that are bristle to see which you prefer. Keep in mind that generally you'll want your smaller brushes to be synthetic. Here are some starter packs of each:
  • - Synthetic : https://www.utrechtart.com/items/04635-1009/
  • -Bristle: https://www.dickblick.com/items/04633-1009/
