A visual metaphor is an image that the viewer is meant to understand as a symbol for something else. While their painting technique is widely different, Georgia O’Keeffe and Susan Rothenberg both transformed ordinary images into personal metaphors in their paintings. You will study the paint application, color, and composition of each artist, while you develop your own visual metaphors. Both O’Keeffe and Rothenberg bridged the gap between representation and abstraction. For example, O’Keeffe does this by altering the scale of objects and flowers, and Rothenberg’s gestural brushwork merges with a flat image, blurring the line with a vigorous physical and kinetic energy. In this ten-week course, you will make two main paintings and several short studies in the manner of O’Keeffe and Rothenberg. This class steps you from representational painting into expressive abstraction. Intermediate to Advanced painting experience required. Oil or Acrylic paints.
