This class is Hybrid: The class will consist of a weekly recorded demo + 2 hours in class on Zoom (Critiques and Q&A).

The beauty of nature stirs the emotions and inspires the spirit. Working from natural items such as twigs, leaves, moss, etc., develop an intimate understanding of plant structure while conveying an emotional, aesthetic response to what you see. Using graphite, learn to simplify the innumerable details of nature, develop a feel for composition and strengthen your drawing technique.Follow along with detailed recorded demonstrations, then apply that knowledge to your own drawings! Individual instruction and constructive critique keep you moving smoothly through the drawing process.

This class will touch on:
Understand value - light and shadow
Plan the composition of your drawing
Learn to focus on simple shapes and gestures
Learn techniques for rendering twigs, leaves, moss, etc.
Create beautiful, finished drawings

  • This is a list of required and optional supplies for class. Specific brands are for reference only, if you have something similar, use that.

  • Paper
  • - Canson XL Mix Media Sketchbook for thumbnail sketches and notes
  • - Stonehenge Drawing paper for finished drawings – quality, white drawing paper, 11x14 or larger
  • Pencils
  • - A 0.7 mechanical pencil such as a Pentel “Twist-Erase”
  • Erasers
  • - A kneaded eraser
  • - A white vinyl eraser
  • - Pen-type eraser- large and/or small
  • -Soft brush for removing eraser crumbs
  • - Pencil sharpener or a blade and sandpaper
  • - A drawing board good for drawing at an easel, large enough for your drawing paper
  • - A roll (or pad) of tracing paper - many uses
  • - A roll (or pad) of glassine to protect drawings from smudging in storage or transport
  • - Graphite (wax-less) transfer paper
  • - Electric eraser
  • - A small plastic t-square
  • - Spray workable fixative and final fixative
  • - A folder to keep drawings in (make one from foamboard)
  • - View Finder
  • - Value Step Chart/gray scale
