This class is Hybrid: The class will consist of a weekly recorded demo + 2 hours in class on Zoom (Critiques and Q&A).

Learn to bring color into your drawings with colored pencil! Somewhere between drawing and painting, using colored pencil gives you the full range of glorious color without the special equipment and, shall we say it… mess, of many other mediums! Follow along with detailed recorded demonstrations, then apply that knowledge to your own drawings! Individual instruction and constructive critique keep you moving smoothly through the process.

In this class, you will:
Plan your drawing
Learn how to choose the right colors
Learn techniques for applying the color
Learn blending techniques
Create beautiful, finished drawings
*Prismacolor Premier colored pencils

  • Required
  • ? Colored Pencils - I use Prismacolor Premier which are wax-based pencils. Get a set of 36 or more colors. You can use other brands of artist-quality colored pencils if you have them - Cran D’ache (wax-based), Derwent Artists (wax-based), Faber Castell Polychromos (oil-based). Hint: look for sales! Also, Michaels carries Prismacolor Premier - use their 40% coupon!
  • ? Paper - Strathmore 400 Bristol Vellum or similar heavy, smooth paper.
  • ? Prismacolor colorless blender pencil
  • ? Gamsol OMS - (odorless mineral spirits) small bottle, and a small jar with a lid to work from.
  • ? Brush - small, round, pointed watercolor brush for gamsol.
  • ? Sketchbook - for planning sketches and notes, such as a 9x12 Canson XL Mix Media pad
  • ? Tracing Paper - a pad or 12” roll
  • ? Drawing Pencils - graphite, range of hardness
  • ? Sakura Gelly Roll Pen - #10 white
  • ? Kneaded Eraser
  • ? Vinyl Erasers - Tombow Mono Zero and other pen-type erasers of various sizes, regular block white vinyl eraser.
  • ? Pencil Sharpener - Prismacolor Premier Pencil Sharpener or similar, hand held or electric.
  • ? Desk Lamp - to light your model
  • ? Foam board - 20”x30” (or cardboard) to make a shadow box
  • ? Drawing Board - large enough for your favorite drawing size - 11x14 or larger. Tilt-up, table-top drawing boards are nice. If working on a table, be sure to protect the table top from oms.
  • Safety Considerations: Gamsol OMS is a low odor solvent that is safer than turpentines, etc. but must be handled with respect. It is combustible and can be fatal if swallowed. Always keep Gamsol covered while using.
