This course is an introduction to water-based mediums, with a particular emphasis on watercolor paintings and ink drawings. Students will learn the foundations of watercolor painting and ink drawings, with a survey of modern color theory and applications of water-based mediums. The course is grounded in an exploration of materiality of surfaces, technical rendering versus abstraction, and critical discourse of historical and contemporary influences in water-based mediums. Inspirations for projects will draw from both Western masters and East Asian calligraphers, and students will leave the course with a finished series of imagined landscape paintings.
