Animation is for everyone, whether you’re someone who is passionate about animated media or you are simply curious to expand your knowledge of sequential art and how it is evolving in the modern era. In this course, each week we will learn how to make hand-drawn, frame-by-frame animations digitally using Disney’s 12 animation principles. We will also be studying animated examples for each topic and diving into the history of animation as a whole. The first five weeks we will be covering most of the essentials and warming up with gestures, bouncing balls, and flour sacks. The last five weeks you will be able to apply and learn the remaining principles through a simple shot of your choice! At the end of the course, the goal is to have an understanding of the basic principles, an overview of animation history, an improved quick sketch ability (as there will be lots of drawing!), and your very own animated shot.

  • Supply list
  • The instructor will be using Clip Studio Paint EX for class demos.
  • Required:
  • A digital program able to animate. Clip Studio Paint EX is recommended. There is a 3 month free trial available on the website. Students are welcome to use a program they prefer if it has a frame-by-frame animation feature- some examples are Photoshop, Procreate, ToonBoom Harmony, Adobe Animate, and TVPaint. Note: if this is the case, some instructions / features may not be 1:1 to the demos, but they should be able to replicate most of the frame-by-frame animation we will be doing.
  • A drawing tablet of some sort. For the best cheap option, Huion H420 USB Graphics Drawing Tablet is recommended (about $30 on Amazon).
  • Recommended optional material
  • The Animator’s Survival Kit by Richard Williams
