Bursting on the local art scene a mere three years ago, Anthony White has quickly become one of the most talked-about artists in the region. White uses common plastics, put on with a glue gun, to form his meticulously woven creations, which tell colorful tales of gluttony and excess. He describes as influences “Grocery stores, toy stores, the Dutch Golden Age, people’s expressions in their personal spaces, MySpace, Instagram feeds, arcades, and the internet.” His portraits and figure paintings, like his still lives, are crammed with the detritus and brand names of consumer culture, both gorgeous and repellent at the same time. We’ll talk to him about his unique painting process, as well as the immersion in the pop culture which so dominates his work.
