In this workshop, students will learn how improve their portrait painting skills.
Included will be presentations on portrait structure and anatomy, direct painting techniques, how to get a likeness, color and color mixing in portrait painting, composition and expression.
The instructor will provide video demos of the class topics as well as visual discussions of the history of portrait painting, images of contemporary portrait painting and styles, and strategies for developing your own style.
Open to all media and levels of experience.

  • Basic painting materials (these will be thoroughly discussed in class)
  • Al Gury
  • Basic painting classic palette (the same colors can be used for acrylic, watercolor and pastel).
  • · Yellow Ochre
  • · Raw Umber
  • · Burnt Sienna
  • · Ivory Black
  • · Cadmium Yellow Light
  • · Cadmium Red Medium
  • · Permanent Rose
  • · Ultramarine Blue
  • · Chromium Oxide Green
  • · Dioxazine Purple
  • · Titanium White
  • Surfaces:
  • Gessoed painting surfaces, 8X10-11X14
  • Basic color surfaces are white, gray, tan. These can be opaque or transparent imprimaturas.
  • · Containers for oil and thinners (Preferably metal or heavy plastic. Not glass because they break)
  • · Palette for mixing colors (Disposable, wood, metal, etc.)
  • · Linseed oil
  • · Brushes for oil. (3-4 well shaped and flexible bristle brushes)
  • · Paper towels
  • · View finder for compositional choices
  • · Canvases
  • Sketchbook for thumbnail sketches.
  • Charcoal or pencils for sketches
  • All other materials and media are welcome as needed
