Paint from the live model, and work from short-to-long poses as you study color-mixing strategies and application techniques. Develop your understanding of oil painting with each figure painting and how to treat the figure as a pictorial subject.

  • · Flake White (If you prefer not to use a lead white, a mixed white is recommended)
  • · Naples Yellow Light
  • · Yellow Ochre Light (Old Holland)
  • · Burnt Sienna
  • · Cadmium Red Light (Gamblin)
  • · Light Red (Winsor Newton)
  • · Alizarin Crimson
  • · Kings Blue
  • · Ultramarine Blue
  • · Ivory Black
  • · Cadmium Green Light
  • · Viridian Green
  • · Raw Umber (Winsor Newton)
  • Supports:
  • · 1 - 16”x 20” Canvas panel primed with the middle-value gray gesso.
  • Brushes: You can bring in your favorite brushes to work with, but in case you need to purchase some here is what I suggest to start with.
  • · 1 or 2 each of #2, 4, 6, & 8 filbert bristle brushes
  • · 1 or 2 each of #2, 4 & 6 filbert synthetic or sable brushes for oil
  • · 1 or 2 each of #4 or #6 round synthetic or sable brushes*
  • * A very good round is the #4 Escoda Modernisia
  • Other Materials:
  • · Sketch pad and pencil for thumbnail studies and notes
  • · Palette (glass or wooden, be sure the wooden palette is sealed such as a New Wave palette)
  • · Maul Stick* *(optional but very handy)
  • · 2 trowel shaped palette knifes (Dick Blick style #44 is a good size)
  • · Clean absorbent rags
  • · Paper towels
  • · Refined Linseed oil
  • · OMS – Odorless Mineral Sprits (Gamsol is preferred)
  • · 1 jar with lid for solvent
  • · 1 small jar with lid for medium
  • · 3 – 2” Spring clamps
  • · Masterson Sta-Wet Palette Seal* *(optional to store and transport a wet palette
