Many Artists have not been as fortunate as some of us to get that good training we got in Art School. As we all know, drawing is the most important thing we can do to sharpen our judgement and get more quality paintings. We will take those skills and use them to apply to learning the principles of Design: overlaps, tangents, quiet and busy areas, unequal spacings, variety of shapes and sizes, rhythm and movement. We will use those principles of design and apply them to our own individual style. We essentially are getting our ideas and concepts down on paper or board so that we can see what may be working and what is not.

For at least one day we will do smaller value studies, around 6x8" or 8x10". You can do the value studies in Bistre Conte or a 2B compressed charcoal and do the studies on smooth newsprint or a smooth bond paper. Or do the value studies in oils or acrylics by premixing about 5 values... and paint on small panels of canvas or linen. We will talk about how important it is to have great reference photos and how to take them. We will use those principles of design and apply them to our own individual style. We essentially are getting our ideas and concepts down on paper or board so that we can see what may be working and what is not. A lot of trial and error. I will be doing at least two or three demos every morning and we will discuss the process so that it makes sense and we can build our confidence and competence in knowing and mastering the principles of design.. The second day some may be able to do a color study or two and others may still need to work on th

  • Student Supply List: Students can work in dry media or Oils. For dry media you would use Bistre Conte or 2B compressed charcoal sticks. I recommend working of smooth newsprint or a smooth white bond paper. Have a mat knife to sharpen your conte or charcoal sticks and some sandpaper to smooth it down. A kneaded eraser and drawing board to put your paper on ..the other option is to use Oil Paints: Titanium white, cadmium cadmium orange, cadmium red lite, transparent brown oxide, ivory black. Brushes: I mostly use bristle brushes, mainly filberts and brights #2,#4,#6,#8,#. I usually have at least two or three of each. I mostly use ready made oil primed linen panels to paint on, anywhere from 4"x6" to 8”x10” for value studies. Some places to get panels are: www.CanvasPanels.com , www.newtraditionsartpanels.com , www.windriverarts.com . Linen panels are a bit expensive and a good canvas panel will do. Have a good easel such as the French easel, Have a good size container to clean your brushes with and a small cup for your medium. I use odorless Turp to clean brushes and for my medium. I usually use a glass or plexiglass palette, wood palettes are fine as are the fold out palette pals. I have a palette knife and/or a scraper to clean my palette and a roll of soft paper towels to clean my palette and brushes with. We will use oils by premixing four or five value puddles. Equipment and paints do get expensive, and do the best you can, but cheap paints, brushes and panels can really keep a person from doing their best work. We will be doing value studies in the 6"x8" to 8"x10" range. Bring some of your own favorite photos to work from and I will have a large selection of my photos that you can work from.. I have great photos of landscapes, figures, and portraits from all over the country and world for you to use! Bring a good sense of humor and we will work hard and have a good time doing it!!
