In this class we’ll delve into various ways of creating single panel, sequential and abstract comics and cartoons by drawing, collaging, stenciling and more. Weekly slide shows pertaining to that day’s assignment, along with lessons on visual art techniques such as shading, perspective and using fonts to boost your story are included. In order to get deep – to “go in for the snakes,” as cartoonist Tom Hart says – we often loosen up with free-writing sessions. Discussion, show-and-tell and class critiques are also a part of the curriculum. Whether you have an idea for a character or a story, or have never even made a drawing, this class will support you to the next step of your cartooning journey. This has always been a fun class because somehow humor (not that comics have to be funny!) fosters a sense of community.

No class on Monday, May 29th.

  • We recommend that everyone registered for an in-person program at Gage Academy of Art receives full COVID-19 vaccination. Gage leaves the use of face coverings when indoors at the facility up to each individual as masks are not required.

  • Your favorite mediums plus mediums you would like to try (if using water-based media, please bring thicker, quality paper – your art deserves it!), a quality drawing tablet at least 14" h. plus a cheaper tablet (newsprint?) for exercises; a straight edge (or we can share in class), drawing pencils (one 2B for sure), a kneaded eraser, scissors or blade (those small, retractable kinds at the hardware store for 99 cents are swell), glue, black ink, brush for ink. Optional: collage accessories, color pencils, rubber stamps, patterned paper, digital drawing equipment, stencils, etc.
