Drawing Basics Boot Camp
Class | This program is completed
In this intensive 5-week class, you will learn line and shading techniques and different types of mark-making using pencil and eraser on paper. Working from an inspiring still life set up, you will complete one flat 2-dimensional drawing, learning to identify and reproduce specific angles, positive and negative shapes, and to maintain a consistent scale throughout the image. You will also study the cube, the sphere, the cone, and the cylinder and how to render them as believeable 3-dimensional forms using a 6-value scale of relative values from darkest dark to white.
PENCILS
Pencils - HB, 2B: Several of each
PAPER
One pad of a good quality white drawing paper: 18x24", 80 - 100 lb weight. Two good options are: Borden and Riley #116 Artist Sketch Vellum, 90 lb., 18x24", 40 sheets OR Seth Cole Vellum Sketch Pad, 90 lb., 18x24", 40 sheets (both of these are available at Artist and Craftsman Supply in the University District); Strathmore and Canson also make similar pads. DO NOT BUY NEWSPRINT! - it is too flimsy.
MISCELLANEOUS
1 kneaded eraser
1 roll 1/2 or 3/4" masking tape (white Artist's tape is good)
12" clear see-through ruler
1 pencil sharpener (the gold 2-hole kind is the best)
1 Stanley knife, or similar utility knife
1-2 bulldog clips
Optional - one drawing board large enough to hold 18x24" paper, can be foamcore, masonite, plywood, etc. (You can use the drawing boards available at Gage during class but cannot take them home.)
Optional - 1 small plastic see-through protractor; 12” clear see through ruler
