In this comprehensive still life oil painting course, you will embark on a transformative journey to master the art of creating a beautiful still life oil painting. Over the course of this class, you will delve into the intricacies of this versatile medium. We will begin by exploring the essential elements of still life painting, covering topics such as composition, color temperature, light and shadow, and the nuances of value. You will also be introduced to a diverse range of oil painting techniques to help you bring your artistic visions to life. Each week will provide a stepping stone for your artistic growth, with concepts and skills building upon the foundations laid in the previous weeks. This progressive approach ensures that you develop a strong understanding of the painting process and a comprehensive foundation in still life oil painting.

  • *Artist Grade Oil Paints:
    • Titanium White
    • Cadmium Yellow
    • Naples Yellow
    • Yellow Ochre
    • Indian Red
    • Cadmium Red Light
    • Alizarin Crimson
    • Burnt Sienna
    • Raw Umber (Winsor Newton)
    • Cadmium Green Light (Williamsburg)
    • Green Earth
    • Ultramarine Blue
    • Ivory Black
    * Preferably no student grade oil paints such as Gamblin “1980” , Winsor Newton “Winton”, Blick Studio Oil Colors or Grumbacher Academy Oil colors.
    Supports:
    • 2 – 9”x 12” or 11”x 14” canvas panels or stretched canvas toned to a mid-grey value (suggested but not mandatory). Additional canvas panels or a canvas pad will be needed for optional homework.
    Brushes: You can bring in your favorite brushes to work with, but in case you need to purchase some here is what I suggest to start with. In either case you must have both bristle brushes and softer synthetic brushes in a variety of sizes for this class.
    • 1 each of #2, 4, 6, & 8 filbert bristle brushes
    • 1 each of #2, 4 & 6 filbert synthetic brushes
    • 1 each of #2 or #4 round synthetic brushes*
    • *A very good round is the #4 Escoda Modernisia
    Other Materials:
    • View finder
    • Sketch pad and pencil
    • Palette (glass or wooden, be sure the wooden palette is sealed)
    • 2 trowel shaped palette knifes (Dick Blick style #44 is a good size)
    • Absorbent rags (this is important and old t-shirts are great)
    • Paper towels
    • Refined Linseed oil
    • OMS – Odorless Mineral Spirits (Gamblin Gamsol is approved at Gage)
    • Brush washer
    • 1 very small jar with lid for medium
    • Masterson Sta-Wet Palette Seal (to store wet paints)
    • Mahl Stick (optional, but very handy)
    • *2 Bull dog clips *(if you purchase canvas panels)
    • Still life objects that will last over the 5-week course
