In this course, you will begin to learn how to excel in capturing an accurate representation of a subject. Working with portrait models, you'll explore the fundamental techniques and principles of proportion, line, value, volume, and structure. Our emphasis will be on honing your visual processing skills, enabling you to transform what you observe into a captivating portrait.

No class on May 27th.

  • Supports and paper:
    • Drawing board 18” x 24"
    • Strathmore 500 series white charcoal paper 18” x 24"
    • Rough Newsprint 18” x 24” (to pad your drawing paper, gestures and thumbnails)
    • Strathmore 500 series Blue Grey or Smoke Grey charcoal drawing paper 18”x 24” or larger (1 or 2 sheets).
    • Dark charcoal paper, such as Canson Ingres paper - Stygian black or Dark blue, Canson Mi Teintes paper - Indigo Blue #140, Black #425, Fabriano Tiziano paper - Indigo blue #39, Blue night #42, or Black #31, Daler Rowney Canford paper, Plum, Royal blue, Navy blue or Jet Black (1 or 2 sheets).

    Drawing Materials:
    • General’s Charcoal pencils (several HB’s & one 2B)
    • General’s White charcoal pencil
    • Conte Crayon pencil, white
    • Conte Crayon stick, white
    • Kneaded eraser
    • White eraser
    • Blending Stumps (not the spiral wound ones)
    • Willow Charcoal (Med. Sticks 5-6 mm)
    • Chamois
    • Small Snap knife from hardware store
    • Sandpaper (one piece of 150 sandpaper is all you’ll need)
    • 2 bull dog clips
    • Wooden skewer
    • Dividers
    • View finder
    • Optional Tombow Zero Refillable Round Eraser (VERY useful)
