Explore the vibrancy and brilliance of colored pencils. Learn color theory, mixing color values by layering, the importance of pressure techniques, blending, burnishing, washing with solvent and using watercolor pencils. Exercises include value thumbnail sketches to set composition, a variety of subjects; floral, skin tones and creating various textures. Colored pencil history, brands and papers will be discussed. Demonstrations, reference handouts and photos provided weekly.

  • Preferred materials:
    Colored pencils - at least 24 count, any one brand: Prismacolor, Derwent (Wax based) or Faber Castel Polycromos (Oil Based)
    Watercolor pencils – at least 12 count
    Colorless Blending Pencil - Usually sold separately in 2 pack
    9 x 12 sketch pad
    White plastic and kneaded eraser
    Graphite pencil 2H or HB
    Factus or Tombow Mono pencil eraser (optional)
    Painter’s tape or any low tac tape

    Optional:
    Papers: Bristol Vellum (slight texture), Bristol Smooth, Stonehenge (slight texture)
    Micron Pens – Set of .005 – 8 (for Urban sketching)
