Figure Drawing with Value and Space

LOCATION NOTE: This class will be taking place at our brand new South Lake Union location, 2107 Westlake Ave.
Working from the model we’ll learn to use charcoal and areas of value to describe the figure in space. Working with natural light and focusing on the figurative tradition of artists like Edwin Dickinson, we’ll hone in on observing mindfully to create drawings that capture a specific moment in tone.
- Vine charcoal medium and soft, large pieces no smaller than ?”-½” diameter
- Willow Charcoal/Thin vine charcoal ¼” diameter
- Drawing paper 18x24, optional any other paper you enjoy working with or want to explore, like laid paper or cold press water-color paper, soft papers like rives BFK, or Fabriano
- Sandpaper
- Chamois or soft rag
- Kneaded eraser
- Pink or white vinyl eraser
- Small click eraser ?” diameter eraser
- Skewer for measuring
- Soft clean paintbrush 1-2” ish (just to dust off eraser crumbs and charcoal dust)
Optional- Compressed charcoal White chalk/pastel charcoal pencils assorted hardness (if you happen to have)
