Figure Drawing: A Constructive Approach

Class | Available

Instruction Medium: Graphite and/or Charcoal

This drawing workshop will expose you to the general principles of figure drawing, design and representing the figure as a volume in space. Conceptual and geometric strategies are presented to, not only address spatial and structural issues relating to creating a figure drawing, but also to empower each student with problem solving skills relating to their figure drawings. There will be a basic anatomical referencing but with a focus on skeletal structure.

This workshop will cover the traditional basics skills of figure gesture, symmetry, proportions, light and shade, and a constructive / geometrical approach to the basic structural units of the body (skeletal anatomy), along with some commentary of their art historical context. Only after understanding these principles and skills can the student make sensitive, informed choices that will strengthen the content of their figurative work.

The class is welcomes to all levels. Those first taking up the challenge and for those who wish to refine their current draftsmanship. The goal is to expose the student to a basic drawing strategy to help with the challenges of figure drawing.
