Painting Images with Encaustic

Instruction Medium: Encaustic wax medium and oil paint
This class will cover basic encaustic painting technique for the encaustic and non-encaustic artist who wants to paint images with the ancient medium of encaustic. Do you like immediacy and flexibility? This medium is for you!
In this class, students will work from photo references that they provide. Class topics include:
• Using a heated pallet
• Applying the paint and scraping to remove it
• Painting on panel and paper
• Using drawing materials with encaustic paint
Consumables:
• Encaustic wax medium in granulated or pellet form – Gage will 1/2 lbs available for students to purchase for $15, or students can bring their own.
• Dry pigment titanium white and Ivory or Mars black, 16 fluid oz each

• Oil paint colors of choice- depending on what you want to paint!
• Encaustic color blocks of choice -depending on what you want to paint!
• Untreated wood panels or those made specially for encaustic
• A selection of drawing paper - white or tinted (such as Canson drawing paper/or watercolor paper)
• Drawing materials of choice - oil pastels pencils, conte crayons, charcoal…
• Masking tape
Non-Consumables:
• Natural bristle paint brushes for oil painting - flats and filberts are especially good (Excluding rounds)
• Natural bristle large brushes - at least 2, house painters trim brushes work well. Flat or angle. (Brushes will never be able to be used for anything other than encaustic once used for encaustic)
• Pallet knifes
Willow Bader
Willow Bader always knew she was an artist. She was born in WA State and grew up drawing and creating at every opportunity. She studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia where she was generously awarded prizes and grants including the Scheidt Travel scholarship which she used for two months of travel in Europe. She currently shows with Cole Gallery in Edmonds WA and teaches at Gage Academy of Art. Her painting studio in Seattle is always open to visitors.
