Mastering Acrylics and Watercolor

This workshop will focus on techniques in painting the effects of light on form in various situations resulting in masterful paintings. The "how to's" in achieving dynamic and impressionistic paintings using painterly brushwork will be demonstrated daily. The still life, landscape and introduction of the figure in a painting will be covered throughout the workshop. Color relationships, values, edges and temperatures of light and shadow will be discussed.
Massing and organizing darks and lights, understanding atmospheric and linear perspective and using a value sketch will also be covered. Students will receive individual instruction handling challenging aspects of the acrylic and watercolor mediums along with daily critique sessions. How to manipulate edges in acrylics and control the fluidity of watercolor while incorporating the loose, impressionistic approach will be understood with great results. Students will experience exciting painting techniques, develop a personal style in artistic approaches and gain inspiration and enthusiasm for future paintings.
Note: Betty will be supplying acrylic paints for the workshop.
Betty Carr
Betty Carr's distinctive, energetic painting style and enthusiasm for art has been apparent throughout her distinguished career. She has a Master of Fine Art (MFA) degree from San Jose State University. and has taught painting and sculpture for many years. She has been selected as a Master Artist in the American Impressionist Society, AISM and signature status in the following organizations:
- Arizona Plein Air Painters (APAP),
- Northern Arizona Watercolor Society (NAWS), and
- Knickerbocker Artists New York (KA).
She has taught art privately, as well as in colleges and museums. She has served as a juror for many regional and national art exhibitions throughout the United States and has traveled extensively gathering inspirational subject matter through her plein air painting experiences.
Carr is the author of the acclaimed instructional book, "Seeing the Light, an Artist's Guide", North Light. Her work is featured in numerous books and magazines including "Creative Composition & Design," "The Painter's Workshop," "Splash 5," "Painter's Quick Reference: Flowers & Landscapes," "Flower Pocket Pal," "Sedona's Best Artists," among others. Her painting "Autumn Vineyards" won the prestigious award at the Sedona Plein Air Festival, Alcantara Vineyards. Her work has been featured on Southwest Art's cover, as well as in "Vitality Magazine", "American Artist", "International Artist'', Art Talk, among many others. Plein air painting is a major part of her teaching on capturing the light. Her experience in both small-scale and monumental sculpture contributes to her passion for "seeing" and painting light and shadow dimensionally. Betty has gained national acclaim as a painter of light. Her paintings and workshops are well known both nationally and internationally.
Her passion for teaching and sharing techniques in painting light in watercolors, oils, and acrylics has been practiced for many years and enjoyed by numerous students.
