This Picture Book Illustrating course will give the student an exciting opportunity and the courage to undertake a project of illustrating their own book, with their own text or with the text of their choice. Working on one’s own text is even more fun and provides a very rewarding and unforgettable experience. The course will equip the student with knowledge about illustrating techniques, the thumbnail sketch process, page layout, text editing targeting specifically picture books and self-publishing options. It will give them hands-on experience in editing, sketching, planning, designing and illustrating a part, or the whole, of their chosen text. During the workshop, a variety of examples of picture books illustrated by renowned illustrators representing different styles and approaches will be available to students as a source of inspiration. The course is designed for all students, including those with no artistic experience. Those who have experience will be able if they choose, to use their favorite technique to illustrate their book, however, a variety of techniques will be introduced, including collage, paper cutouts, mixed media, painting, drawing and simplified symbolic imagery as to allow everybody to find their own way of expression. Students will work exclusively in traditional media. No digital work is involved. Each session of the course will cover a different stage of the illustrating process, while students will work on selected pages of their books, and it is expected that they continue the work between sessions, using knowledge gained during the session. Completing the homework is advisable if a student wants to bring the project to the final stage. www.lagidaostling.weebly.com

Lagida-Ostling, Dorota

Dorota was born and raised in Warsaw, Poland, where she studied Painting, Illustration, Product Design and Ceramics at National Academy of Fine Arts and where she graduated with a degree of Master in Fine Arts. Though she majored in ceramics, soon after graduation she turned her interest to illustrating children’s books. While living in Poland, and after moving out of the country over two decades ago, she’s continued to make illustrations for children's magazines and books in the USA and Canada. She worked for a large number of clients all the while raising her three sons and studying creative writing. Please visit her illustration website: http://lagidaostling.weebly.com/ When she moved to Australia in 2012, she added painting to her list of passions and now she’s combining the three. Her paintings have distinct illustrative qualities. Please visit her painting website: http://dlootherside.wixsite.com/dotsart Through all these years she also taught art at different venues: University of Toronto, Canada, Mid-Michigan community college, USA, Art Reach Center of Mid-Michigan, USA, Ipswich Art Society in Australia, Redcliffe City Art Gallery in Australia, as well as giving private lessons and instructions. In 2015 she participated in an important project sponsored by Artslink, Australia, aimed at reviving the historic center of Ipswich. Part of this project was a large mural which she painted with two other artists. Please view the video of the mural project at: http://artslinkqld.com.au/regional-arts/animatingspaces/animating-spaces-ipswich-river-life/ Now she’s back in the USA, she lives in Tempe, Arizona, paints pictures and works on a series of books which she’s writing and plans to illustrate.
