This workshop will focus on the foundational principles required to complete successful landscape paintings in the field. These instructors all agree that a solid understanding of drawing, value, design, and color is fundamental when it comes to analyzing the subject at hand and completing a solid painting. We will cover these principles in depth and discuss how they apply to organic form which is so commonly found in a natural environment. Participants should expect plenty of personal attention and daily demos. This class is open to all skill levels. On Sunday, all students will attend an all-day lecture series during which each instructor will lecture for approximately one hour. There will be four days of instruction (Monday-Thursday) The instructors will be splitting into two teams: Eric and Mitch and Aimee and Dave. Students will be split into two groups with each group spending two days with each team. Scottsdale Artists’ School cancellation policies apply. Immediately following the workshop, all four instructors will be traveling to the Vermilion Cliffs in Northern Arizona for three full days of painting. Though it won’t be a continuation of the class or instruction, workshop participants are welcome to join the excursion to paint the area. We will drive up on Friday the 18th and begin painting on the 19th. Additional information will be provided upon enrollment.

Baird, Mitch
Mitch Baird

As a representational painter Mitch believes that painting is a celebration of life and the beauty that surrounds us.  He is devoted to the traditions of the late 19th century artists who looked to the figure and nature for inspiration regarding light, color, and design.  Seeking out this inspiration, Mitch works directly from life to capture the qualities and nuances of natural light and color harmony.  He has a strong conviction that great artistic communication depends on good draftsmanship, design and vision.  His artistic desire is to "portray a positive visual statement and hope the viewer will experience what I see and in some sense be inspired, uplifted, or moved by my painting, whether it is of a small intimate setting or a grandiose subject." 

 

Mitch resides in the desert southwest in Mesa, Arizona.  He is a Signature Member of the Oil Painters of America, the American Impressionist Society, and the former President of the prestigious Plein Air Painters of America (PAPA). 

Erickson, Aimee
Aimee Erickson

Known for its engaging style and versatility in subject matter, Aimee Erickson is an internationally renowned oil painter and instructor who has given lectures and demonstrations at venues nationwide and abroad. She maintains an interest in a range of subject matter and is known for her still lifes, portrait/figure work, and landscape paintings. She is a standout at plein air painting competitions, and recently authored “Plein Air Techniques for Artists,” published by Rockport Publishers. 

She has exhibited with international plein-air groups in China and Russia, is an inaugural member of Charlie Hunter’s En Train Air expedition and painted the official portrait of the governor of Oregon Barbara Roberts. 

Erickson’s professional affiliations include Plein Air Painters of America, Oil Painters of America, Laguna Plein Air Painters Association, American Impressionist Society, and the California Art Club; her work has been featured in Southwest Art Magazine, American Art Collector, and PleinAir Magazine, and on OutdoorPainter.com.

Erickson has a BFA in Visual Communication Design with an Illustration emphasis. She lives in Portland, Oregon, and carries a sketchbook.

Jacobsen, Eric
Eric Jacobsen

"It is most important to me that my paintings convey a certain mood", Eric says. "I want them to be felt by the viewer without his or her having to analyze or think about them. As a general rule, I try to find strong compositions in nature and then paint the scene accurately while leaving out any extraneous details which would only busy up the painting and detract from the strength of the piece as a whole. My painting process consists of finding a painting site and setting up to paint for a couple of hours, or until the light has changed. For larger paintings, I will return on consecutive days at the same time, under similar lighting conditions to finish a piece.”

Santillanes, Dave
Dave Santillanes

A self-taught artist, Dave Santillanes began painting shortly after graduating from Colorado State University with a degree in Graphic Design. But he points to his first plein air excursions as the true beginning of his development as a painter where direct observation allowed for a more precise rendering of color, light and atmosphere. And although studying the physical aspects of nature is important, it isn’t the only reason Dave paints outdoors. He says, “the sensory experience of being there is equally important. There’s no better way to get to really know a place than to sit for a couple of hours and contemplate it while painting. This intense observation brings a spiritual intimacy with the scene that can’t be achieved in mere passing and allows me to “speak” with complete sincerity in each painting.” Dave’s passion for painting has led to a number of recent awards including First Place in the Signature Division of the 2019 OPA Fall Showcase, 3rd Place Overall at the 8th Annual Plein Air Salon Finals, First Place in the Landscape Category at the 12th annual International ARC Salon, and the Landscape Award of Excellence at the 25th National Oil Painters of America Show. He’s also won numerous awards for his plein air work and has been featured in both Plein Air and Southwest Art Magazine.
