Distinctly different from round sculpture, relief sculpture offers a multitude of opportunities for compositional contexts. In this workshop, students will share Daub’s passion and wealth of knowledge in this medium. Relief sculpture is well suited for work done from photographs, allowing the artist to work from a wide range of subjects and models unavailable for sitting, including commissioned works of public figures, portraits of family members, still life, and architectural settings. This workshop will include a live model all week, however, students may work from a pho¬to if they desire. Daub provides daily lectures and demonstrations and gives many individual critiques. www.dfsculpturestudios.com

  • Dear Friends and fellow Artists, I’m looking forward to seeing you all in a few weeks and would like to give those of you who haven’t taken the class a short briefing. We will have a model all week, one for a two-day pose and the other a three-day pose. There will be a demo for the figure and another for the portrait. Some of you may wish to do two figures. You may also choose to bring a photo to work from for a portrait. I would like to stress that if you do that, please make sure you have a very good photo to work from. Avoid photos taken with a flash. Relief is challenging enough with out not being able to see. A flash tends to blow away the subtle shadows that give information about the forms. If you get stuck you can always work from the model.
  • Bring a small clip on light, since the overheads are not quite enough in some spots.
  • We’ll be working with wet clay for model poses. 25 lb bags of water-based clay will be available for purchase directly from Scottsdale Artists’ School. However, if you wish to work from your own photo you may prefer to work in oil clay.
  • NOTE: If you choose to work in oil-based clay, you need to purchase your own. It can be ordered in advance from Ball Consulting, and delivered to the School on the first day of the workshop. Ball Consulting: 480/967.7727
  • The boards we will be working on (available at SAS) are 19 x 24. It may be possible to get them in your suitcase, or you can have them shipped home.
  • Tools: Bring your favorites The tool I find most useful is the large wood # 289 from Compleat Sculptor or Sculpture Depot I’ll bring a few extras.
