Light and Composition

Workshop | Available

Scott will be demonstrating his approach to painting cityscapes and landscapes, in the studio from start to finish. Students will see how he starts with an accurate drawing, followed by a painterly paint application. Scott will communicate the basics of painting a scene, focusing on composition, light, values, edge control and proportions. Daily demos and one-on-one time with Scott will help to reinforce these concepts.
Students will hone their skills by learning to see light, shadow, color, and temperature change, breaking shapes down, simplifying them and how to apply these elements to their paintings in the studio or out painting plein air. Students should bring some reference photos to work from. Prior also says that students should be prepared to have way too much fun and that they should bring their portable painting gear because, "if the light's right we're painting outside!"

Prior, Scott W.
Scott W. Prior

Scott W. Prior, is a native of Southern California. As a kid growing up in Costa Mesa, he was interested in skateboarding, surfing, and BMX. To help with the boredom of being injured from these hobbies, his mother gave him a sketch pad and some charcoal pencils. Scott’s been drawing and painting ever since. Prior studied illustration and painting at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, CA. At the Academy, he studied under artists Craig Nelson, Bill Maughan and HuiHan Lui, where he learned higher artistic ideals through intensive study while developing a solid foundation of design, drawing and painting. Fast forward to today, where he is known for his mastery of painting light, form and structure. Focusing on contemporary urban/genre painting, as well as figurative and portrait painting. Scott is a Signature Artist member with the California Art Club and the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association. He has been awarded and recognized many magazines, organizations and shows. Last year, Prior was featured in the “Three to Watch” section of Fine Art Connoisseur Magazine. He’s been awarded by the Portrait Society of America and in October of 2013, he won the Best in Show Award, at the prestigious 15th Annual Laguna Plein Air Painting Invitational.
