Capturing the Light
Workshop | Available
Tim began his career painting outside, but now spends much of his time painting in the studio. In this workshop, most of the time will be spent indoors, with some painting time spent outdoors as well, weather permitting. Tim is best known for the light in his paintings coupled with strong composition. The primary focus will be how to convey the sense of strong sunlight in a painting by identifying, clarifying, and pushing the values. Exercises will be used to help simplify these concepts. Students will also work on achieving clean color in their paintings and utilize value patterns to aid in developing successful compositions. During the workshop, Tim will create a demonstration painting each day and work with students individually on their paintings throughout the day. Tim will also present slideshows, using examples of his work and the work of others to illustrate key concepts. www.timhornart.com
Timothy Horn
"My paintings are as much about the subjects I paint as they are about the effects of light within a particular scene."
Born and raised in the small town of Yellow Springs, Ohio, Tim graduated from the Cooper Union School of Art in New York City, where graphic design was his focus. After finishing school, he worked at several design firms in NYC before moving to San Francisco, where he continued to work as a designer.
Tim took his first painting class after working as a designer for over 20 years. Within a year he realized he had found his calling and was completely hooked. He began painting more and more and doing less and less graphic design. In the fall of 2006, he closed his design business and now paints full time. He lives in Northern California and paints all over the Bay Area when he's not working in his studio. About half his work is done on location, or “plein air”, and the rest is done in his studio from studies or photographs.
He participates in about 3 annual group shows, is represented by 4 galleries and teaches painting workshops around the country and abroad. Horn’s work has won numerous awards, been featured in several magazines, and was on the cover of Southwest Art in 2012. He is a member of the American Impressionist Society, an Artist Member of the California Art Club, and a Signature Member of the Oil Painters of America.
