Tonal Landscapes

Workshop | Available

This four-day oil painting workshop with Richie Carter will focus on painting low light tonal landscapes. Students will be working from photo references to complete at least one small preliminary study in order to realize one larger rendition of the same scene and undertake the challenges that come along with this process. The workshop will address how to use photo references to create a painting. Students will learn a subdued tonal palette as well as various techniques with which to render low light scenes. Students will learn over the course of four days, both direct and indirect painting methods. The larger piece will be built upon day by day creating layers and depth in the final painting. www.richiecarterfinearts.com

Carter, Richie
Richie Carter

Richie Carter was born and raised in North West, Montana. Being brought up in a rural community, he has always had an affinity for the landscape. He obtained his Bachelors of Fine Arts from the University of Montana with a focus in painting. Amidst a lot of work-based travel, Richie resides and works from his Montana based studio. "When I am not in my studio working on large scale still life and landscape paintings, you can find me out on location gathering reference materials, from the backcountry of Montana, to the deserts of the South West, or on the cobbled streets of various European cities. I love to travel and meet people of different cultures, taking inspiration from a myriad of sources. Painting is a universal visual language that breaks down barriers, and I hope through my own work, it can serve to cultivate authentic human connection. My goal is to make impactful, striking, yet simplistic images that evoke emotion and allow a dialogue to take place between the rich tradition of realism and the contemporary reality of our time."
