Oil Portraits with Gold Leaf
Adult Online Art | Available
Online on Zoom | October 4th, 11th and 18th 2025 from 10am-1pm Arizona Time (*always on MST) | recording will be available for 2 months
During the workshop students will work on a portrait over the course of 3 workshop days for three consecutive Saturdays, giving them an opportunity to work on their portraits in between. Students will be working from a photo reference and learning the differences between photos and working from life. Various types of portrait lighting patterns will be explained. Nicole will give critiques as well as demonstrations in intervals throughout the painting process so that students can observe and follow those steps in their own paintings.
There will be some instruction on drawing and facial proportions, but most of the class will focus on how to incorporate synthetic gold leaf gilding practices into your painting to create a beautiful luster and captivating effect, while drawing on historical gilded painting examples. Students will also learn oil painting techniques, mixing and blending skin tones, organizing the colors on your palette to facilitate success and efficiency, looking for correct value relationships and creating form. Students will be given a completed drawing or reference provided by the instructor to transfer to the canvas so that they have more time to concentrate on the painting techniques and gilding. Throughout the workshop, Troup will give demonstrations and critiques.
