Visualizing Your Painting – Design and Composition through Value Studies

Planning with quick grayscale marker sketches is a powerful way to explore design and composition ideas. In this workshop, we will focus on understanding form and how it interacts with value—essential elements for creating light-filled, compelling paintings. Visualizing the painting: we will discuss multiple ways to visualize a painting beyond marker sketches using photographs and digital tools in black and white. We'll explore how to use Photoshop and photo tools and apps to study scenes through a value-based lens.?Design Tools: Learn proven design formulas and strategies to strengthen your compositions. We'll share successful examples and walk through how to apply them to your own work. Ongoing Design Strategies: Gain tools and techniques to continue developing your design skills beyond the workshop.?A Zoom orientation and discussion will be held prior to the in-person studio workshop (recording will be available if unable to attend). Ray Roberts
Ray Roberts studied with John Asaro at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. He is a Signature member of Plein Air Painters of America, Laguna Plein Air Painters Association, California Art Club, and Northwest Rendezvous. He recently received a Gold Medal for “Best Painting” from the California Art Club and the Artists’ Choice Award at three major southwest art exhibitions. He has been featured in Southwest Art and Plein Air Magazine. Roberts and his wife, the artist Peggi Kroll Roberts, live in California. His work may be viewed at Medicine Man Galleries, Tucson, AZ; James J. Rieser Fine Art, Carmel, CA; and Hollis Gallery, South Pasadena, CA.
