Creating Emotional Connection:Harnessing the Power of Expression

Workshop | Available

Capturing a likeness of a person reveals how we see them, but capturing the humanity of a person is how their soul speaks back. This is the heart of this workshop. Join Louis for a four-day journey focused on creating emotional connection through human expression. Through a blend of lectures, live demonstrations, and individualized instruction, you’ll learn how to infuse portraits with life and feeling. We’ll explore the science behind facial expressions, the subtleties of gesture, and the role of design, lighting, and color theory in shaping mood. Each day, you’ll apply these concepts by working from life, receiving hands-on critiques and guidance along the way. By the end of the workshop, you’ll leave with not only practical skills but also a deeper understanding of the visual language of emotion—equipping you to create portraits that resonate on a poetic and profoundly human level. lcarr.faso.com

Carr, Louis
Louis Carr

Louis Carr (b. 1981 - Clarksdale, Mississippi) lives in Raleigh, North Carolina. Louis’s work focuses on classical realism through the delicate rendition of the human figure and landscapes of the natural world. Since the materialization of his artistic gifts during his childhood, he has embarked on a lifelong journey to establish himself as a master of fine art. His amiability and innate aptitude for business make him an exceptional, versatile tutor, and his dexterous draftsmanship and perceptive interpretation of value and form instill a visible vitality in his paintings, preserving a high demand for his work. Early influences by artists such as Marshall J. Bouldin III (September 6, 1923 – November 12, 2012) inspired his specialization in human portraiture, and with the steadfast support of his family, Louis entered the profession full time at the age of 20. After building a strong client network and independent business, he received a highly distinguished scholarship to complete a Fine Arts degree at the University of Mississippi. In 2013, compelled to refine his technical skills even further, he moved to New York to study at the Grand Central Atelier under renowned artists Jacob Collins and Joshua LaRock. In 2017, in partnership with Joshua and fellow artist Michael Klein, Louis founded East Oaks Studio in Raleigh, North Carolina, to propagate an influential environment, within which a new community of artists seeking to master excellence could thrive.
